Challenges Are Just Opportunities in Disguise: Interview with Mark Whitley, Founder and CEO of Whits Corporation
I recently went one-on-one with Mark Whitley, founder and CEO of Whits Corporation.
Adam: Thanks again for taking the time to share your advice. First things first, though, I am sure readers would love to learn more about you. How did you get here? What experiences, failures, setbacks, or challenges have been most instrumental to your growth?
Mark: My journey to founding Whits Services Corporation began over a decade ago with a simple observation: many companies struggled to recycle non-traditional materials efficiently. Recognizing this gap, I saw an opportunity to innovate and provide solutions for these hard-to-recycle waste streams. Of course, the path wasn't always smooth. We faced challenges like managing the complexity of non-conventional recycling and handling difficult-to-recycle materials. But each setback taught us valuable lessons and pushed us to think creatively. Today, we've expanded significantly, working with over 3,600 vendors across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, transforming waste into opportunity.
Adam: How did you come up with your business idea? What advice do you have for others on how to come up with great ideas?
Mark: The idea for Whits Services Corporation sprouted from noticing a significant gap in the recycling industry. Many companies were at a loss when it came to disposing of materials that didn't fit traditional recycling models. My advice to others? Pay attention to the overlooked problems. Often, the best ideas are hidden in plain sight, waiting for someone curious enough to tackle them. Stay adaptable, be willing to take risks, and don't be afraid to get your hands a little dirty—both literally and metaphorically!
Adam: How did you know your business idea was worth pursuing? What advice do you have on how to best test a business idea?
Mark: I realized our concept had potential when numerous companies approached us, seeking assistance with their non-traditional waste and recycling needs. Their struggles validated the necessity for customized recycling solutions. To test a business idea, start small. Pilot your concept with a limited audience, gather feedback, and be prepared to pivot based on what you learn. Remember, it's about solving a real problem, not just having a flashy idea.
Adam: What are the key steps you have taken to grow your business? What advice do you have for others on how to take their businesses to the next level?
Mark: Growing Whits Services Corporation involved several key steps: building strategic partnerships, investing in innovative recycling technologies, and expanding our network across North America and the Caribbean. We also prioritized understanding our clients' unique needs, allowing us to develop tailored waste management strategies. For others looking to elevate their businesses, I'd suggest focusing on solving genuine problems, fostering strong relationships, and maintaining a culture of continuous innovation. And always remember, a little humor goes a long way in building connections!
Adam: What are your best sales and marketing tips?
Mark: Focus on building genuine relationships. Understand your customers' pain points and offer solutions that truly address their needs. At Whits Services, we've grown by providing customized recycling solutions that tackle real challenges. Don't underestimate the power of word-of-mouth; satisfied customers are your best advocates. And, of course, keep your messaging consistent and transparent. Authenticity builds trust, and trust is the foundation of any successful business. Plus, a well-timed joke never hurts!
Adam: In your experience, what are the defining qualities of an effective leader? How can leaders and aspiring leaders take their leadership skills to the next level?
Mark: An effective leader is adaptable, empathetic, and decisive. Leading by example and maintaining open communication are crucial for building trust and inspiring teams. For those looking to enhance their leadership skills, I'd recommend staying curious and never ceasing to learn. Surround yourself with talented individuals, empower them, and don't shy away from making tough decisions. Leadership is about guiding others through challenges and remaining committed to your vision, even when the going gets tough. And remember, humility and a good sense of humor can make the journey more enjoyable for everyone.
Adam: What is your best advice on building, leading, and managing teams?
Mark: Building a strong team starts with hiring individuals who not only possess the right skills but also align with your company's values and vision. At Whits Services, we emphasize open communication and strive to create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. To lead and manage effectively, trust your team, empower them to make decisions, and provide the support they need to grow. Lead with empathy, set clear expectations, and always acknowledge hard work and achievements. And don't forget to share a laugh now and then; it fosters camaraderie and makes the workplace more enjoyable.
Adam: What are your three best tips applicable to entrepreneurs, executives, and civic leaders?
Mark:
Identify and Solve Real Problems: The foundation of Whits Services Corporation was built on addressing hard-to-recycle waste streams that others overlooked. By focusing on genuine challenges, growth follows naturally.
Build Strategic Partnerships: Expanding our network across North America and the Caribbean was possible because of strong partnerships. Collaborate with those who complement your vision and values. A solid network can open doors to new opportunities and accelerate growth.
Lead with Integrity and Empathy: Effective leadership isn't just about making decisions—it's about guiding and inspiring others. Be transparent, listen actively, and empower your team. When people feel valued and supported, they perform at their best. And remember, a little humor can go a long way in building rapport and easing tensions.
Adam: What is the single best piece of advice you have ever received?
Mark: The best advice I've ever received is to stay true to my values, regardless of the challenges. Building Whits Services Corporation had its moments of uncertainty, but remaining committed to integrity and our mission of sustainability guided every decision. It taught me that success isn't solely about profit—it's about making a positive impact. When you lead with purpose, the results will follow. And don't forget to enjoy the journey; after all, laughter is the best recycling of the soul.
Adam: Is there anything else you would like to share?
Mark: I'd like to emphasize that success is a journey shaped by resilience and continuous learning. At Whits Services Corporation, we're always exploring new ways to transform waste into opportunity. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that challenges are just opportunities in disguise. For anyone looking to make a difference—whether in business or in their community—don't be afraid to take risks and innovate. The impact you make can go far beyond what you imagine.
